Chart of the Day: U.S. dollar vs Major Currencies

The current value of the U.S. dollar (USD) compared to a basket of other major currencies (see here for index calculations) is amongst the weakest it has ever been. The USD was at its strongest back in February 1985 when the index stood at 148.12. As of 14 September 2012 the index stands at 71.78, a drop of 51.5% from the all-time high. The lowest (weakest) level the USD has hit so far was 68.09, which took place in May 2011. The average index value since 1973 is 95.49 with a median of 94.74. The current value of the USD is hence 24.8% lower than average.
