The excess reserves of U.S. banks (depository institutions) increased to $1.61679 trillion for the month of February, an increase of $97.3 billion (6.4%) on January following aggressive purchases by the Fed of treasuries and mortgage backed securities during the month.

Excess reserves, having increased by $158 billion (10.8%) during the first two months of this year alone, is now just $1.33 billion short of the all-time high $1.61812 trillion recorded back in July 2011.
