Base Money and Money Supply Contract, Euro area Monetary Base & Money Supply (as of 31.12.2012)

The European Central Bank (ECB) reported its monetary statistics for the euro area for the period ending December 2012 on 28 January 2013.

Base money continued to increase substantially on last year and remained fairly stable between March 2012 to October 2012. The base has however contracted some in the last couple of months and as of December it is 8.10% lower than the all-time high which took place in June 2012. The M1 monetary aggregate increased 6.13% year-on-year (YoY), but was down slightly on last month. The M2 money supply continued its upward climb increasing 4.40% YoY while M3 increased 2.76% on the same basis. The values of M2 and M3 money supply were both, as for M1, lower than the prior month.
